History of Babcock Ranch
While the area now known as Babcock Ranch was first purchased by the Perry Wadsworth McAdow family in the late 1800s, the ranch did not receive its name until 1914.
During this time, Edward Babcock, who was a Pittsburgh lumber magnate and politician, bought the 91,000-acre ranch and gave it the name Babcock Ranch. During the 1930s, Fred Babcock, Edward Babcock’s son, expanded the operations of the ranch to include businesses such as alligator farming and swamp buggy tours.
After the death of Fred Babcock, the heirs who inherited the ranch attempted to sell it back to the state, but the negotiations for this sale ended in 2005 with no sale occurring.
