The History of the Wonder Gardens
Located in Bonita Springs, a short drive from our Fort Myers vacation rentals, the Wonder Gardens have been educating visitors and locals alike about the region’s natural environment and wildlife for about 85 years.
The gardens started as a roadside reptile attraction in the 1930s, until eventually gaining non-profit status in 2013, after being bought by a local conservationist. The gardens are home to more than 300 animals, including primarily rescued and non-releasable birds and reptiles.
The Wonder Garden Residents
Follow the paths to meet the gardens’ approximately 300 residents. Species include birds, such as parrots, macaws, cockatoos and lorikeets, Indian peafowls, and the American alligators. Immerse yourself in local and international fauna just minutes from Fort Myers beach vacation rentals.
Various Exhibits
Four main exhibits await visitors to the Wonder Gardens. Stop by the macaws, where seven species were rescued when a Washington state sanctuary closed. The birds’ feathers are a variety of colors — see if you can spot them all!
Visit with Kiwi the green parrot and her friends, and meet the residents of the “Gator Hole,” American alligators that can’t be released into the wild. Spot them patrolling their marshy habitat or soaking up some rays in their enclosure.
Finally, visit the elegant pink flamingos as they wade in the waters. The flamingos that currently call the Lagoon home were hatched on the property in the 1960s and 1970s, and have been there ever since.
Unique Animal Encounters
Come face-to-face with reptiles and birds during the Wonder Gardens’ animal encounters. Feed one of the earth’s largest tortoise species and chatty lorikeets on this guided adventure.
The Sulcata tortoise is the third-largest species, weighing up to about 200 pounds. Join these gentle giants in their recreated natural habitats, using tongs to feed the fresh vegetables. Participants are allowed to take photos and touch them lightly while they eat. For obvious reasons, closed-toed shoes are required!
Next up, is the lorikeet habitat. Expect “calls, chortles, and coos” as you enter the habitat, the organization says. Participants will feed multicolored rainbow lorikeets and black-bellied coconut lorikeets from a cup of nectar. Be prepared for birds to land on guests’ arms, shoulders, and heads as they dine and investigate their houseguests.
These 30-minute encounters take place on select days at 11:30 a.m. and small groups of up to six people are allowed. Be sure to book ahead to reserve your spot.
